If a staff member encounters a verbally abusive situation that possibly involves threat with a deadly weapon, they should:
- Stand back and allow person to say what is on their mind or if a burglary, allow them to take whatever they want.
- State that you will try and address the situation.
- State to other staff to “please contact the person that can help resolve this situation”. (This is “code” wording to other staff members to contact the Public First Responders.)
- Speak calmly and ask the person what they want.
- Look for opportunities to flee the area and head to the building exit and to a safe area.
- When the person has left the building, call 911 and have Security secure all public entry points until Public First Responders arrive.
- Follow the instructions of the Public First Responders upon their arrival.
