Face-to-Face Threat

Procedure

If a staff member encounters a verbally abusive situation that possibly involves threat with a deadly weapon, they should:

  1. Stand back and allow person to say what is on their mind or if a burglary, allow them to take whatever they want.
  2. State that you will try and address the situation.
  3. State to other staff to “please contact the person that can help resolve this situation”. (This is “code” wording to other staff members to contact the Public First Responders.)
  4. Speak calmly and ask the person what they want.
  5. Look for opportunities to flee the area and head to the building exit and to a safe area.
  6. When the person has left the building, call 911 and have Security secure all public entry points until Public First Responders arrive.
  7. Follow the instructions of the Public First Responders upon their arrival.
