RESPONDING TO ACTIVE SHOOTER ON PREMISES
If a staff member becomes aware of an active shooter on the property or in the building, they should leave everything behind and immediately evacuate the area:
RUN – Evacuate the building
- Keep hands in the air
- Contact 911 when safe
- Follow directions of all public First Responders
HIDE – If unable to evacuate, shelter-in-place in a lockable room
- Remain out of sight, barricade doors and turn out lights
- Remain silent and silence mobile devices
- Contact 911
If evacuation or shelter-in-place are not possible:
- Call 911 and identify active shooter’s location
- If unable to speak, leave the line open and allow responder dispatch to listen
- Remain in secure locations until the First Responders arrive and give instructions.
- FIGHT – Take action against the active shooter ONLY when your life is in imminent danger. Attempt to disrupt the active shooter by acting as aggressively as possible against them.
